Lingo at Peligro sa Trabahong Unipormado
Sept 18, 2010
Continue reading
Minimally Invasive Surgery
Sept 18, 2010
The trend in surgery today is towards minimally in vasive techniques, all geared for patient comfort, lesser blood loss, lesser pain, lesser morbidity, shorter hospital stay, faster recovery, less obvious scars. These procedures are performed by surgeons specially trained in robotic surgery and/or minimally invasive surgery.
For example: while standard open cholescystectomy (surgical removal of the gall bladder) requires a 5-8 inch incision in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen, all laparoscopic cholecystectomy needs are four small one-inch ports (thumb-size incisional holes), which post-operatively are smaller and much lesser painful compared to the large incision in the open technique. ‘DIVIDE ET IMPERA’
(Divide and Conquer)
The ancient Romans wrote the ‘book’ on hostile takeovers. Borrowing a leaf from those conquerors Spain and the United States turned Filipinos against themselves. This was an effective way to seize control of the Archipelago tribe by tribe village by village. The only Filipinos who effectively resisted the invaders were the Muslims of Mindanao. Fiercely independent, the Islamic south never wanted ‘in’ with the Manila government. Despite later absorption into the Philippines they resisted as best they could. Continue reading

by Carmelita Cochingco Ballesteros.
Sept 18, 2010
Among the many guests who at tended Julia’s wedding reception and witnessed the unhappy consequence of her conversation with her husband, no one sided with Alberto, not even in thought. They all agreed that Alberto was wrong.
They could have blamed Julia for insisting that he marry her, but they did not. Instead, they all said: “Julia’s unfortunate and Alberto’s a heartless man.” Continue reading
How Empty is an Empty Nest?
Sept 18, 2010
The label “empty nester” takes on a more personal meaning now that it has hit close to home, our home. Our last child flies the proverbial coop Friday and it’s official — my husband and I are empty nesters!
Where did time go? After just over 20 years, we found ourselves dropping our last child off at O’Hare en route to join her older sister in Los Angeles. It feels like it was just yesterday when I took a picture of my two girls posing with an umbrella in each of their hand. Even at a young age, my girls pretty much gave themselves away. The expressions on their faces have withstood the test of time. Continue reading
