The Making of a Monument (One generation’s legacy to the next)

The Dr. Jose Rizal Monument was the brain child of the late Sir Roberto Roque and Lady Herminia Roque of the Order of the Knights of Rizal, Malaya Chapter. Conceived in 1994, the initial plan was to purchase a bronze statue at $65,000. A letter was sent to Quintin Pastrana, Deputy Director of the Philippine Centennial Commission for the acquisition of the statue in 1997. Continue reading

Unlike most, if not all, locally sponsored beauty pageants in the Filipino American community of Chicago, the second Sampaguita Ball injected its prime movers’ vision of a genuine beauty pageant that’s anchored on beauty and brains, purpose, cultural heritage and educational values, a far cry from money-centered pageants the community has witnessed all these years.
