Why I go to Church
by Nelia Dingcong Bernabe

Self-discovery, like the proverbial “light bulb moment,” could happen anywhere at any given time. It springs up unannounced and forces us to delve deeper within ourselves to seek out answers that would otherwise be overlooked. Continue reading
On Politics and Values
by Arnold De Villa
November 13, 2010
Politics and values are like two immiscible substances, incompatible and mutually rejecting each other in a constant struggle for precedence. The former, a competition between groups and individuals for power and leadership seem to collide with the latter, that which we regard as worthy and important. The current elections we just had somewhat reflects this reality. Stereotypes of perceived values were attached to a specific party, whether it is traditional or ultra-directional (e.g. tea party) Continue reading
No relief in sight: One In Ten Americans Faces Home Foreclosure
by Don Azarias
November 13, 2010
The employment crisis is now putting one in every ten Americans in the threshold of homelessness. Those American homeowners with mortgage are at risk of losing their homes through foreclosure. The jobs crisis is putting more Americans at risk of losing their homes. The great American dream of owning a home has never looked so impossible to achieve. One in 10 households has missed at least one mortgage payment, and more than 2 million homes have been repossessed since the recession began. Few people expect the outlook to improve until companies start to hire steadily again and layoffs ease. Continue reading
DARK DOCTRINES Part One Philippine Voodoo
by Fred C. Wilson III

BLACK ARTS IN THE PHILIPPINES
Voodoo or Vodou is alive and well in the Philippines. Like in many so-called ‘Catholic’ countries, Christianity and Voodoo (Vodou) aren’t mutually exclusive. In isolated out-of-the-way places in the Philippine archipelago the island of Siquijor comes to mind. On Siquijor many Christians often practice Vodou though the official hierarchical Church strongly disproves. The Philippine Province of Siquijor is noted for witchcraft. Shamans, witches who practice healing as opposed to sorcerers, twisted individuals whose mission in life is to inflict pain, death, and destruction, both vie for members. Continue reading

What is Body Art?
Body Art is a popular fad among adolescents and young adults, which includes tattooing or body part piercing. The tattoos are usually on the chest, arms, belly, butts, ankles, or on just about any area of the body. They come in different shapes, design, color and various objects, like a girl, snake, flag, heart, words of protest or love messages. It is estimated that 10% to 25% of young adults (25 and under) have at least one tattoo. Continue reading
Filipinos and Chinese Share Need for Justice
by Rodel Rodis

A Filipina friend from Israel emailed me that when she was in Hongkong a few years ago, she visited a non-Filipino colleague at his condo unit. As she was leaving, he warned her that she might get challenged for using the elevator because Filipino domestic employees, he said, are restricted to the stairs. “It was a very high-rise building!” my friend related in shock. In the new award-winning Ted Unarce documentary, Modern Day Slaves, a Filipina domestic employee in Hongkong (one of four OFW subjects of the film) narrates how she was punished for prematurely cooking rice before her employer had ordered her to do so.
