No Easy Fix For Sluggish Economic Recovery

A couple of months ago, a friend of mine from the cyberspace who loves to invest in the stock market made a friendly bet with me that the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) would be up to 11000 or 12000 by this time. Basing my calculations on the results of leading economic indicators, I decided to be cautious and told him that the DJIA would stay between 9500 and a little over 10000 during the same period. And to be honest with you, I was hoping that he was right. However, at the rate the economy is faring, I’m beginning to think that our bet will end up in a draw. The DJIA is currently between 10000 and 11000. Whatever the outcome, it’s something worth rejoicing because it’s not really as bad as most economists and analysts have predicted. Continue reading

So singer-songwriter Katy Perry’s day of fun and frolic with Elmo on Sesame Street got the boot before it hit the boob tube (don’t you love them puns?). I heard it was because she was showing a lot of boobies and God forbid the little tykes get a peek at them through their bottles during naptime. Can’t have that!
Curiosity got the better of me so I went on YouTube and checked out the raucous. The video is short, just under three minutes and there are plenty of versions to choose from. Comelec drops Reyes as 1-UTAK nominee

MANILA — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has disqualified former Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes as the first nominee of One-United Transport Koalisyon (1-UTAK) party-list at the House of Representatives.

In a Commission en banc resolution, they ruled that Reyes does not truly represent 1-UTAK since the retired general failed to prove that he was an advocate of the transport group despite presenting a long list of evidentiary documents looking to prove that he promotes the advocacies of the party-list group. BIR to conduct ‘lifestyle check’ vs. gov’t officials linked to ‘jueteng’

QUEZON CITY – The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) is set to conduct a “lifestyle check” on government officials who have been linked to the illegal numbers game called “jueteng.”

BIR Commissioner Kim Jacinto-Henares told reporters in a press conference at the Department of Justice that the “lifestyle check” will be based on the list disclosed by retired Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz during the recent Senate hearing on the illegal numbers game.

De Lima delegates authority to DOJ officials

MANILA— Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Leila De Lima has delegated authority on the duties and responsibilities of the Undersecretaries and other officials of the DOJ.

Peso closes at more than two-year high

MANILA –- Decision of the US Federal Reserve to maintain to near-zero level its rates boosted the Philippine peso after it closed Wednesday to its more than two-year high of 43.88 to a dollar.

Wednesday’s closing is near the 43.75 to a dollar level it registered in June 2008.

It is better than the 44 level it registered in the previous day and ended to this level after a high of 43.95 and low of 43.88. Continue reading

RP, Canada renew workers’ deployment agreement

MANILA — The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Tuesday signed a renewed Memorandum of Understanding with Department of Labour and Immigration (LIM) of the Province of Manitoba, Canada concerning cooperation in human resource deployment and development.

“This MOU is closely aligned to the overarching goal of President Benigno S. Aquino III to invest and develop our human resources to make us more competitive and employable. Sandoval is Sandiganbayan Presiding Justice

MANILA — President Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III has appointed Associate Justice Edilberto Sandoval as Presiding Justice of the anti-graft court Sandiganbayan.
