Corteza  2nd placer in Shanghai’s World-9 Ball


MANILA — China’s Yu Long Zhang captured the China Open World 9-Ball title last Sunday by beating Antonio “Nickoy” Lining, 11-7, of the Philippines in the final at the Minya Hotel in Shanghai, China.

In a pool report by IM Marlon Bernardino, Zhang’s victory highlighted a brilliant day for China after its recent domination in the Partypoker.net World Cup of Pool Tournament was held last Sept. 12 in Robinsons Place, Manila.

China’s pair of Li He-wen and Fu Jian-bo edged the tandem of Dennis “Robocop” Orcollo and Roberto “Pinoy Superman” Gomez for the Partypoker.net World Cup of Pool title.

And on the way to the finals, Zhang beat 2010 Predator Sweet 16 Champion Lee Vann “The Slayer” Corteza of the Philippines, 11-7, while Lining, the pride of Pinamalayan, Oriental Mindoro defeated Liu Hai Tao of China, 11-7.

In the women’s event, Si Ming Chen edged Allison Fisher of Great Britain, 9-7, to complete the Chinese supremacy in the world of pool.

Chen is the student of former World Pool Champion Taiwanese Wu Chia-ching. The wins were worth US$ 40,000 for Zhang and US$ 26,000 for Chen.

Other Filipino pool players who competed in this week-long event were Efren “Bata” Reyes, Francisco “Django” Bustamante, Marlon “Marvelous” Manalo, Jeffrey “The Bull” de Luna, Vinancio “Tukao” Tanio and Rodolfo “Boy Samson” Luat in the men’s competition and Rubilen “Bingkay” Amit for the distaff side.
