West Nile Virus Outbreak
by Dr. Philip S. Chua.
October 1, 2012
The worst ever outbreak of West Nile virus in the United States, infecting more than 1590 and killing 65 persons as of August 28, 2012, tripled in just two weeks, which makes this year the largest mosquito-carried infection since 1999, when this infection was detected for the first time in the USA, now involving 48 states. Fifty-six percent (889 cases) were neuro-invasive. This was reported by the US-CDC’s division of vector-borne diseases. Continue reading
C2
by Fermin Salvador.
October 1, 2012
Continue reading
Comprehensive Classroom Approach Part One
by Fred C. Wilson III
October 1, 2012
The threat of a system-wide teacher strike was days away at the time of this writing. We need ways to fix our ailing public schools. The old methods have failed. A Comprehensive Approach to Education could revitalize our nation’s schools. Educators/parents/city governments must take a holistic approach to learning; a comprehensive approach. Dire necessity demands that we prioritize. Public education in the United States has no moral foundation. Continue reading
GOP Candidates Paid More In Taxes And Charities Than Democratic Rivals
by Don Azarias
Ocotber 1, 2012
Why are the Democrats raising a big stink about Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s newly-released tax returns? Though he earned a lot of money, mostly through investments, he paid millions of dollars in taxes and gave millions more to charity. Yet why are they still hell-bent on making a campaign issue about the rate of Romney’s income tax payment when, in reality, Romney didn’t do anything illegal. Continue reading
Notes from a Curious Bystander (Part II – Filipino American Community Health Initiative of Chicago – FACHIC)
by Arnold De Villa
October 1, 2012
There are not so many Filipino American organizations that start as an offshoot of an academic pursuit. Something like this should be present in every Suburb and City of Illinois. Chicago has been fortunate that someone pursuing a degree in Medicine and Public Health from the University of Chicago chose to utilize the Albert Schweitzer Fellowship program to meet the health needs of the Filipino senior community. Cavite Food Fest
by Carmelita Cochingco Ballesteros.
October 1, 2012
Have you heard of “Pansit Choco?” “Kabuteng Sisig?” “Lihim ni Lola?” These were the three intriguing dishes which I discovered when I attended my first food fest called, “Taste of Cavite,” at Gourmet Farms on August 28, 2012. In addition, I found out that some dishes and delicacies are quite similar to the ones I grew up with in Batangas and Nueva Ecija. Continue reading
Unorthodox diplomacy
October 1, 2012
It’s bad enough when two colorful senators throw insults at one another but when it leads to an international crisis – involving the president no less – it gets ugly… very, very ugly. Yes, no less than the indomitable Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile is involved in the “word war” at one end. Continue reading
It’s Only Politics
Political conversations between people of opposing views often result in heated arguments and sometimes, fights. Even friends of two different political ideologies can hardly engage in a healthy debate because somehow one or both of them get all emotionally worked up and thus, lose their cool. I should know. Continue reading
2016: Obama’s America Anti-Obama propaganda that missed the mark
October 1, 2012
Given the scary message of this anti-Obama documentary which first came out in theaters approximately in mid August this year, it’s a wonder why this President has slightly edged his Republican opponent in national polls and trail the latter in key swing states. If Romney and his Republican Party had thought the movie would be a silver bullet that would kill any hope of Obama’s reelection, then clearly, the bullet missed its mark Continue reading
