Given the scary message of this anti-Obama documentary which first came out in theaters approximately in mid August this year, it’s a wonder why this President has slightly edged his Republican opponent in national polls and trail the latter in key swing states. If Romney and his Republican Party had thought the movie would be a silver bullet that would kill any hope of Obama’s reelection, then clearly, the bullet missed its mark.
Obviously, the success of 2016: Obama’s America at the box office, has not resonated among Independent voters, the only ones to whom this film would have ever made a difference. Unfortunately for the people behind it, he film’s gains at the box office didn’t translate into gains at the polls.
Regardless of the rave reviews and endorsements of the movie by the Right-wingers, the fact remains that people who see this movie, Democrats and Republicans alike, just view it for what they want to see. Obama haters will just hate Obama even more. And Obama lovers and voters will either just dismiss it as another Republican Super PAC propaganda to defeat Obama or challenge the credibility and integrity of the movie.
This film, for all its intent and purposes, played to its political base but failed to come across as a serious, factual and real documentary. It failed at instilling fear and mistrust in Obama, whom D’Souza said was “weirdly sympathetic to the Muslim jihadists” in Afghanistan and Pakistan, seemingly oblivious of the fact that this president successfully ordered the killing of bin Laden and had sent drones to terrorists’ havens in both countries.
Dinesh D’Souza, conservative writer wrote and narrated this so-called documentary film which was largely based on “The Roots of Obama’s Rage.” A couple of wealthy Conservative investors funded the film.
Fact check reviewed the film and found many of the writer’s negative interpretations of the President’s actions not able to hold water. Among its findings were:
* _D’Souza wrongly claims that Obama wants to return control of the Falkland Islands from Britain to Argentina. The U.S. refused in April to endorse a final declaration on Argentina’s claim to the islands at the Summit of the Americas, provoking criticism from other Latin American nations.
* _D’Souza says Obama has “done nothing” to impede Iran’s nuclear ambitions, despite the severe trade and economic sanctions his administration has imposed on that country to halt its suspected nuclear program. Obama opposes a near-term military strike on Iran, either by the U.S. or Israel, although he says the U.S. will never tolerate a nuclear-armed Iran.
* _ D’Souza says Obama removed a bust of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill from the Oval Office because Churchill represented British colonialism. White House curator William Allman said the bust, which had been on loan, was already scheduled to be returned before Obama took office. Another bust of Churchill is on display in the president’s private residence, the White House says.
It’s a shame to even call this 2016 movie a documentary since a documentary is supposed to capture a story in its truest, unadulterated form. It should also be objective and must not bear the story teller’s (writer’s) personal beliefs and opinions. Even in this respect, 2016: Obama’s America, missed the mark.
