Dieting Starts From The Crib
October 1, 2010
As we have written in this column before, in our culture, a chubby kid is somehow considered a healthy child. Most TV commercials today use plump and rotund children in their food and vitamin ads. This sends a wrong and dangerous message, and a disservice to the public, especially to our youngsters. Nothing is farther from the truth. Overweight children, as shown by countless studies, are more likely to develop a cluster of health problems and their complications, compared to their peers with normal weight. The greater the weight excess —the higher a child’s body mass index (BMI), a measure of weight in relation to height — the greater the risk of acquiring the so-called metabolic syndrome early in life, which includes type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases. Obesity, in children or in adult, is pandemic and a significant health danger. Continue reading
Tanaw sa Mindanao
October 1, 2010
Pilipinas. Continue reading

P-Noy’s First 100 Days
October 1, 2010
Catapulted to the presidency on a campaign promise to eradicate corruption, President Benigno “P-Noy” Aquino III’s first 100 days was off to a good start with a trivial “walang wang-wang, walang tong” (no sirens, no bribes) message that made its mark with the people. With a survey taken prior to his inauguration showing an 88% trust rating on him, the populist tone and demagogic appeal of his inaugural message removed any reservation the people might have on P-Noy’s ability to lead the nation. Investors Wary Of Volatile Stock Market
by Don Azarias
October 1, 2010
With the stock market on a roller coaster ride on Wall Street, investors, big and small, are leery putting their money on individual stocks and skeptical that the market, in the midst of a stubborn recession, will regain it’s bullishness anytime soon. Continue reading
Fulfillment of a Promise
by Carmelita Cochingco Ballesteros.
October 1, 2010
It was heart-rending to think of what happened to Julia’s marriage to Alberto – the marriage which she had sought relentlessly. She suffered all alone, since there was no one else whom she could blame for her misfortune.
Worn out because of her search for her husband, she continued asking for information from just about anyone. What made it worse was that there were people who told her that they saw him in this and in that place. Continue reading
Contraceptives and Excommunication
October 1, 2010
Philip Tubeza, in a Philippine Daily Inquirer article posted that CBCP reminds Aquino about excommunication. The totality of Mr. Tubeza’s article focused on issues of birth control, the need for contraceptives to regulate the bulging population of the Philippines, the inclination of the new Philippine President to allow the use of contraceptives, and the position of the Filipino Bishops against anyone who would promulgate and promote the use of such contraceptives with the threat of excommunication.
