Sale of Imelda jewelry collection stopped

Former First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos MANILA — President Arroyo has ordered the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) to hold off any further moves leading to the auction of the jewelry collection worth millions of pesos of former First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos. The order was coursed through Commissioner Ricardo Abcede by Executive Secretary Leandro Mendoza who said President Arroyo is now leaving it to her successor to decide on the final disposition of the Imelda Marcos jewelry.

Palace eyes end to controversy over PGMA appointments

June 18, 2010 MANILA – Malacanang is bewildered at continuing speculations that President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s alleged midnight appointments tied the hands of her successor President-elect Benigno Aquino III.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Gary Olivar said such speculations must end already since these are baseless, noting President Arroyo’s appointments are above-board and Mr. Aquino can always recall these as long as such action is in accordance with law. Continue reading

Aquino to announce full Cabinet this week

June 18, 2010 PARANAQUE CITY — President-elect Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III will announce this week his full Cabinet, a week before he takes his oath on June 30 as the 15th president of the Philippines.

So far, Aquino announced that he will appoint Corazon J. Soliman as social welfare and development secretary, Teresita Deles as presidential adviser on peace process, lawyer Paquito Ochoa as executive secretary and lawyer Edwin Lacierda as presidential spokesperson. Continue reading

U.S. Sen. Burr opposes $67-M Supplemental Filipino Equity Fund

June 2, 2010 CHICAGO (JGLi) – United States Sen. Richard Burr (Rep.-NC) is again playing Scrooge against the Filipino veterans even if they are “dying by the dozens each day. … They do not have too many months left in their lives.”

Burr, a ranking member of the U.S. Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, took the Senate floor Thursday (May 27), to oppose the plan of U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Ken Shinseki to transfer $67-million out of the $103- million saved from “construction projects for medical facilities and maintenance of VA facilities” to the Filipino Equity Fund.
