Obama, other world leaders wish Aquino, Binay success


June 18, 2010  WASHINGTON/MANILA (PhilAmPress) — U.S. President Barack Obama spoke to President-elect Benigno Aquino III and congratulated

him on his election as the Philippines’ 15th president.

While in Shanghai, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo also called up Aquino, congratulated him and wished her successor success.

The leaders of China, Japan, United Kingdom, and other countries also congratulated Aquino and wished him success in his administration.

In a phone call from the White House that lasted 15 to 20 minutes, President Obama “noted the deep historic and people-to-people ties between the United States and the Philippines and our strong cooperation on security and economic issues in the Asia Pacific region and globally.”

“The Philippines is a long time ally and close friend of the United States,” Obama said in a statement issued by the White House.

“The President and President-elect Aquino said they looked forward to bringing our cooperation to a new level and to meeting at a mutually convenient time,” said the statement.

Obama described the May 10 elections in the Philippines “as a model of transparency and positive testament to the strength and vitality of democracy in the Philippines.”

The US leadert and President-elect Aquino said they looked forward “to bringing our cooperation to a new level and to meeting at a mutually convenient time.”

Obama called up Aquino a few hours after Congress proclaimed him the next president and Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay the incoming vice president.
