‘On January 20th the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services reaffirmed a rule that virtually all private health care plans must cover sterilization, abortifacients, and contraception…’ A few Sundays ago American Catholics received a bulletin insert after Mass. The insert was sponsored by the U.S. conference of Catholic bishops. It was regarding the recent mandate issued by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services regarding reproductive services. Reader, if you’re a Christian of another denomination this concerns you too. The big showdown between government and religion has been brewing for decades. This article will give an interpretation of the bishop’s letter.
The ‘original rule that violated our religious liberty so severely had not been changed, but finalized;’ a delaying action between the government and faith based health care institutions is taking place. To delay the inevitable firestorm that’s coming over the government’s alleged violation of religious freedoms regarding women’s reproductive care, the White House temporarily put the original mandate on hold. We know, though, that once laws are made legislators rarely remove them. Sooner or later the government’s original ruling on faith based health institutions will be enforced.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) promised to hold off enforcement of the original mandate for a year. Full enforcement depends on the outcome of the general election on November 2nd. My guess is that if President Obama is reelected all faith based hospitals will be ordered to comply with the ruling regardless of religious affiliation. The new law requires that all private health care plans cover the cost of sterilizations, abortifacients, and contraceptives. If they don’t, they will be sued. If the Republicans win the White House the Obama ruling may be permanently nixed, further suspended, or greatly modified before reimplementation.
‘HHS promised some kind of “accommodation,” but only after the election.’ I think the promise of modification is an Election Day ploy to secure votes. The powers that be couldn’t give a rat’s rump about the reproductive health care rights of women nor anybody else. It’s about votes and the bottom line behind that is the bottom line ($$$$)! Government could care less about our religious rights. Wherever there’s money to be made from kickbacks from pharmaceutical companies and other interested parties, our rights be damned!
Why are there so many millionaires among high government officials? On paper their salaries are quite modest. I agree with the bishops when they said that ‘the impact of these additional rules will not be felt until after the election the only point of public accountability for the Executive Branch.’ Remember what the Bard (William Shakespeare) once said: ‘to your own a** be true.’ The great man didn’t use the expletive but you see what I’m saying. Government officials are pretty keen in taking care of ‘Number One (themselves) and will use any means necessary to further their own agendas.
‘The promised “accommodation” even at its best would still force our institutions to violate their beliefs.’ The proponents (advocates) of the HHS’s mandate are a clever bunch. They’re as sneaky as a sniper in a jungle on a rainy day. Under the proposed “accommodation” if the people who work at Catholic, Evangelical, and other hard line religious institutions want contraceptives and sterilization ‘services’ all employers, insurers, individuals, including religious employers are forced to pay for these services. They’ll pay in part via their insurance plans. My guess is in time our government will force faith based hospitals to pay for and perform abortions as well as provide previously mentioned reproductive ‘services.’ The scary part is that no matter who wins on November 2nd with the national economy continue to go ‘down the toilet,’ the number of abortions and sterilizations will increase dramatically.
In my opinion the U.S. Department of Health and Human’s birth control program is the American version of Eugenics. Eugenics was a social movement founded in the United States, adapted later in Nazi Germany that claims that genetic features of human populations can be improved through selective breeding and sterilization. This implies race ‘purification’ through elimination of those considered ‘undesirable’ elements in American society. Currently the mandate’s sterilization policy is voluntary. I predict in the near future it may be mandatory.
During the 1970’s on a road trip to Iowa I struck up a conversation with a relative of an associate who helped with the driving. She told me she was forcibly sterilized by state authorities. Government doctors tied her fallopian tubes. The state government at the time considered this low income, semi-illiterate young white woman a threat. She had no husband and had borne a number of children out of wedlock. The law was later declared unconstitutional but the damage was done. If they did that to her what about other races and classes deemed ‘undesirable’ by society? I strongly suggest that you read about the Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment and read what government in this country did in the past to racial groups considered undesirable or dangerous.
‘There is no exemption for objecting insurers, secular employers, for-profit religious employers, or individuals.’ No group is spared. Reader it’s not a ‘Catholic thing.’ The mandate’s wording is clear and concise. ‘In turn, all individuals who pay premiums have no escape from subsidizing that (birth control and abortion causing drugs) coverage.’ Religious employers and non-profits may qualify for the limited “accommodation.” Despite this the mandate does violate religious rights to a certain degree. The proposed Respect of Rights of Conscience Act has been introduced in Congress to deal with this problem. If you want to learn more on this hot topic please go to the following sources:
