Comelec plans to include voter’s education module in high school and college curriculums

July 2, 2010 MANILA – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is planning to include voter’s education module in the curriculums of high school and college students to give them more idea about their right of suffrage.

Comelec Commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal said they initially talked about the plan with Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Armin Luistro when they met during the inauguration of President Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III on Wednesday. He said they will further discuss the matter as they are planning to set a meeting with the officials of the DepEd.

Larrazabal said they want to have the module included in the curriculum of fourth year high school students and first year college students.

Although the voter’s education will be taught for only one day, the poll body will provide materials to school libraries so that students will have access on them anytime.

“It will only be for one day, but we will provide them materials,” he said. Larrazabal said the Comelec will take the lead but the implementation of the project will be done by the DepEd and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

The endeavor, he added, will also strengthen the relationship among the three agencies.
