Placer, Masbate, the defending champion in the Free Interpretation (FI) category for two years in a row, will be joining again with a contingent in the Sinulog-based category choreographed by Victor Cuenco.
“So, it’s going to be a tough and exciting competition because the contingents from the City and Province of Cebu will give them a run for their money,” said Sinulog Foundation executive director Ricky Ballesteros.
At least 10 out-of-town contingents have expressed their interest in joining the Sinulog 2012, which will take place on Jan. 15.
These include Dulag and Alang-Alang in Leyte, Sta. Catalina and Dumaguete in Negros Oriental, Lanao del Norte, Zamboanga del Norte, Cotabato, and Tangub City, the defending champions in the Sinulog-based (SB) category for three consecutive years.
Ballesteros said the Sinulog 2012 edition would have an Asean theme, following Cebu City’s designation as a City of Culture by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).
During the launching parade on Jan. 6, 2012, all the dancers will wear Asean costumes while dancing to the Sinulog beat.
For the grand finale, Ballesteros said some 500 dancers will also portray Cebu City as the City of Culture, projecting the city’s creative industries like furniture, fashion, accessories, songs, and dances, among others.
Ballesteros said they asked for P2.5 million from the Cebu City Government for the expenses of the grand finale, aside from the prizes amounting to P18 million.
Ballesteros also said they staged the first ever Sinulog 2012 on-the-spot painting contest at the Fort San Pedro Monday.
The contest is open to all professional and amateur artists, and walk-in participants are also welcome to join.
Ballesteros said the contest is part of the Sinulog 2012 activities and the prizes at stake are P20,000 for the champion, and P10,000 and P5,000 for the first and second runners-up, respectively
