Davide to head Truth Commission

Davide to head Truth Commission July 2, 2010 MANILA — Presidentelect Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III has tapped retired Supreme Court Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr. as head the independent commission that will put closure on controversies of the outgoing government.

”We are establishing the Truth Commission under former Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr. to put closure on many issues, to ensure that those who committed crimes against the people will pay,” Aquino said.

Davide was the High Tribunal’s official who swore in then Vice-President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as President in 2001 following the ouster of then President Joseph Estrada. Upon his retirement as SC chief, Davide was named by President Arroyo as permanent ambassador to the United Nations.

Aquino said in his campaign promises that once elected as the highest official of the land, he would create an independent body that would investigate alleged scams in the Arroyo government.

But Aquino clarified that the independent body will not investigate the Marcosera controversies including the assassination of his father, the late Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr., in 1983.
