Vice Ganda now box office king – or is it queen?



His movie ’Praybeyt Benjamin’ emerges as highest grossing Filipino film
Don’t look now but television host, comedian and singer Vice Ganda maybe proclaimed as the new box office king (or is it queen?)
This after his latest movie “Praybeyt Benjamin broke the box office records and emerged as the highest grossing Filipino movie of all time.
Top television network ABS-CBN whose sister company Star Cinema produced the Vice Ganda starrer reported that Praybeyt Benjamin” grossed nearly P320 million (approximately $7.39 million) in ticket sales after just 20 days.
The comedian, who was discovered at The Library in Malate, readily rejoiced after learning of the box office report.
“Ang saya. Thank you Lord, P300 million na siya as of last night. Hindi ko alam may ibang magic ang Diyos,” Vice Ganda was quoted by ABS-CBN as saying.
His box office performance is expected to boost his present and future showbiz projects, including the top network’s daily program “Showtime” where he is a resident judge.He is also the host of his own show “andang Gabi Vice” which airs every Sunday at 9:30 in the evening at his home network ABS-CBN.
The comedian, whose real name is Jose Marie Borja Viceral, indeed has come a long way.
In fact, he is one of the busiest TV personalities nowadays.
Born in Tondo, Manila, Vice Ganda started as  a stand-up comedian at a comedy bar known as The Library in Malate.
He was discovered by Ogie Diaz, a talk show host and a columnist who later became one of Ganda’s closest friends.
Vice Ganda’s mother Rosario moved to the United States to work after his father was killed in a shooting incident when he was still 13 years old. He is the youngest in the family with two sisters and 2 brothers. He and his mother reunited recently after 19 years of separation.
Vice Ganda’s held his first major concert only last May 15, 2010 entitled “May Nagtext Yung Totoo Vice Ganda sa Araneta.” He had his second major concert, :Eto ang Totoo, Ganda Todong Sample sa Aranet” only last July.
Now 35, Vice Ganda studied in Tondo and later attended the Far Eastern University where he took Political Science course. 
His profile states that his screen name, “Vice Ganda” came from his surname Viceral and “Ganda” describes her “personality” and how he sees himself/
Vice Ganda admitted early he is gay but revealed that he had had at least five girlfriends in the past.  
He said his two brothers are also gay
He talked about his girlfriends during an interiew in a television show early this year.
“Sad to say, yes [nagka-girlfriend ako]. May mga nagagawa talaga tayong nakakadiri sa buhay natin,” he kidded.
Of all the girls he loved before, he had only chanced upon one of them during one of his shows in Punchline, a comedy bar.
“Nanood sa’kin sa Punchline. Ako ang naloka. Nahiya ako na nanood siya sa’kin. Ginirlfriend ko ‘yun dati nung college ako. Tapos sumasali kami sa iba-ibang liga. Tapos siya ‘yung pinakamaganda sa liga na ‘yun.
“Kaya muntik akong bugbugin nung isang basketball player na nanliligaw sa kanya, pero nadaot ko siya,” he recalled.
The ABS-CBN star became the first celebrity to have 1,000,000 fans in Facebook. Currently, he has over 3,000,000 fans.
He has under his sleeves an album entitled Vice Ganda Lakas Tama
He first starred in the movie entitled “Petrang Kabayo.” This movie grossed about P108 million after its first week.
During his birthday (March 31) the other day, Vice Ganda said he wishes for “continuous blessings” not only for himself, but also for “Showtime,” where he got his biggest break to date.
“Ang wish ko lang continuous blessings, ‘di lang para sa’kin, para rin sa ‘Showtime.’ Kasi ‘pag nagtagal ang ‘Showtime’, feeling ko makakasama pa rin nila ako, at tatagal ang stay ko sa showbiz dahil sa ‘Showtime’ dahil feeling ko ‘yung success ko hindi lang dahil sa pinaghirapan ko… ang ganda talaga nung programang nasalihan ko,” the popular host and stand-up comedian said.
He said he is proud of being able to find his niche in show business.
“The mere fact na pinag-aaksayahan niyo ako ng atensyon at panahon dito sa ‘The Buzz,’ siguro naman meron na kong lugar dito sa show business,” Vice said.
