Mikey Arroyo, wife refute tax evasion raps at DoJ

MANILA — Ang Galing Pinoy party-list Rep. Juan Miguel “Mikey” Arroyo and his wife Angela finally showed up at the Department of Justice to debunk the tax evasion charges filed against them by the Bureau of Internal Revenue.

The couple stayed in the United States for vacation and to prepare their answer to the charges.

At the preliminary investigation of the case, the couple stood pat that they paid their taxes regularly, and the right amount, contrary to the BIR claims.

Arroyo and wife were accompanied by their counsel Atty. Ruy Rondain, during the hearing conducted by the panel of prosecutors, headed by State Prosecutor Lagrimas Agaran.

In his counter-affidavit, Arroyo asked for the dismissal of the tax evasion case against him due to lack of merit more so that the BIR erred in the computation of the taxes he paid in his Income Tax Returns (ITRs) he filed with the BIR.

Arroyo expressed his confidence that the case will be dismissed such that he has evidences that will prove that he filed his ITRs for taxable years 2002 up to 2009, which the BIR computed at P73 million.

At the end of the preliminary investigation, the panel of prosecutors ordered both Arroyo and the BIR to submit their respective certified true xeroxed copy of the evidences or annexes, together with the complaint and counter-affidavit.
