RP’s Dadupong claims WBC flyweight silver belt title

June 25, 2010 MANILA — Filipino’s Edrin Dapudong won the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) Flyweight Silver Belt title Sunday (Saturday night in Mexico) with a first-round knockout of Mexican hometown hero Jesus Jimenez at the Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico. “We came to work.

We came to punch. We came to fight. We threw a lot of punches and that’s what we wanted,” Dapudong said. “We saw the punches were making him tender to the body. Fortunately, the knockout came.” With the win, the 23- year-old Dapudong, a shy farmer from M’lang, North Cotabato who is a protégé of former North Cotabato governor and journalist Manny Pinol playing out the Braveheart Boxing Club improved his ring record 18W-2L, 10 KOs.

Jimenez, who is the reigning WBC Latino champion having won the title with a fourth round knockout over Santiago Ivan Acosta (16-2-2, 7 KOs) on June 26, 2009, who stands 5-foot-7, has dropped into a sporting record of 28-6 with 20 KOs. Filipino Rodel Mayol failed to defend his World Boxing Council (WBC) Light Flyweight crown losing to Mexican Omar Nino by unanimous decision at the San Juan del Rio, Queretaro, Mexico.

The bout was very close and plagued by headbutts, with Nino getting the worst of it, suffering bad cuts over both eyes. The bout was stopped several times for Nino to be examined by the ring doctor. Mayol jumped out to an early lead, but Nino was stronger down the stretch. Scores were 115-112, 117- 109, 115-111. This is Nino’s second reign as WBC 108lb champion, having relinquished the belt in 2006 after failing a post fight drug test in Las Vegas.
