CHICAGO – The Philippine Consulate General in Chicago attended the Philippine Movie Night at the Skokie Public Library on October 4 as part of the Filipino American History Month celebration in Skokie.
The award-winning film, Magnifico, was shown at the 210-seating capacity Petty Auditorium, and was attended by City of Skokie officials, Philippine Consulate officers and staff, trade official, movie patrons, and member of the Filipino-American community in Chicago, who supported the free event.
Philippine Consul General to Chicago Leo M. Herrera-Lim delivered brief welcome remarks before the film showing.
Magnifico is a wholesome family movie about a young boy whose amazing love, faith and courage triumphs over life’s sadness and misfortunes, turning most of the moviegoers misty-eyed while watching it.
Most non-Filipino viewers came to Filipinos afterwards, saying that they feel they know the Filipinos more after seeing their culture and tradition on the screen.
Some teachers at Niles North and Niles West High Schools even offered extra credits to students who would take time to view the movie.
Ms. Jelly Carandang, Chair of the National Federation of Filipino American Associations (NaFFAA), Illinois Chapter organized the event in partnership with the Philippine Consulate General, which provided the movie and the Unico Entertainment Inc. that authorized to screen the film in Chicago for free.
