Charice Pempengco graces cover of Reader’s Digest Asia

MANILA – International singing sensation Charice Pempengco has joined famous Filipinos like world boxing icon Manny Pacquiao in the list of those on the cover of Reader’s Digest Asia edition. Charice, who will soon join the American television show “Glee,” is on the cover of the famous magazine for its August 2010 issue. The cover story has for its title, “The Making of a YouTube Sensation.” In the magazine, Charice talked about her life and how her dreams came true with the help of the video sharing site YouTube, according to an ABS-CBN report. Charice, who started to join singing contest as early as six years old, was invited by American TV host Ellen Degeneres when she saw Charice’s performance in Star King, a talent show in Korea.

The video of that guesting stint in Korea was uploaded by a friend, Dave Duenas, using the username FalseVoice. From her guesting on Ellen, Charice was then invited by popular TV host Oprah Winfrey to guest on Oprah. Winfrey then introduced the singer to composer David Foster. Aside from Charice, the magazine Charice Pempengco graces cover of Reader’s Digest Asia also features the life stories of YouTube sensations Iaz and Canadian singer Justin Bieber.

Charice joins the list of other Filipinos who have been featured in the magazine which includes boxing champion Manny Pacquiao, comedian-singer Michael V, and actor Diether Ocampo. It was reported that Showtime judge and comedian Vice Ganda will be featured in the September 2010 issue of Reader’s Digest Asia. Charice just recently wowed South Korean fans with her singing ways. During the inauguration of President Aquino at the Luneta, Charice sang the Philippine national anthem for which she was congratulated by the National Historical Commission for her right rendition of the song.

NHI Heraldry Section chief Teddy Atienza said Charice did the right rendition of our National Anthem wherein the ordinary Filipino, who witnessed the inauguration and oath-taking of President Aquino and easily sang with her. The NHI official added, they will send a congratulatory e-mail to Charice and her mother for the correct version of rendering the “Lupang Hinirang”. Charice, who will join the second season of popular US TV show “Glee”, thanked the NHI for recognizing her rendition of “Lupang Hinirang”. Charice said, her mentor Ryan Cayabyab taught her the correct version of singing our National Anthem which the NHI also recognized. Charice became popular and became an international singing sensation after Ellen Degeneres and Oprah Winfrey gave her a break after seeing the young Filipina on You Tube.
