RP’s Mazon wins Guinness World Series of Pool title

MANILA- Unheralded Jundel Mazon won the 2010 Guinness World Series of Pool 10-Ball Challenge at the Mal Taman Aggrek in Jakarta, Indonesia last Sunday. He went home with the top prize of $40,000. Mazon is nows setting his sight in competing in the longest-running U.S. Open 9-Ball Championships. The U.S. Open is the longest running and most prestigious 9-Ball event in the world. The field is limited to 256 players with a top prize of US$ 50,000. Added incentive: Highest female player will receive US$ 1,000. Most number of racks run by a man will receive US$ 1,000.

“I won’t waste any opportunity given me by Mr. Sy (NBS president Jonathan Sy) and coach Topher (NBS coach Christopher Palses) to play in the world U.S. Open 9-Ball,” said Mazon, fondly called Janno in the local pool. The prize billiard fighter of Negros Billiard Stable (NBS) under the banner of sportsman/ businessman Jonathan “Bacolod” Sy and NBS head coach Christopher Palses defeated former World 10-Ball champion Darren Appleton of Great Britain, 8-6, in the semifinal round, then subdued Irsal Nasution of Indonesia, 10-5, in the finals. The former Middle East Pool Instructor received his biggest paycheck US$ 40,000 in his pro-billiards career. “I’m very confident that Janno has a long way to go, hence, what he needs is a big break, that’s why we are grateful to Jonathan Sy who supports his players in full blast,” added NBS head coach Christopher Palses.

Joining Mazon in the 35th Annual U.S. Open 9-Ball on October 17-23 at the beautiful conference center in Chesapeake, Virginia, USA are fellow NBS players Lee Vann “The Slayer” Corteza, Warren “Warrior” Kiamco, Ramil “Bebeng” Gallego, Rodolfo “Boy Samson” Luat and Ricky “Bai” Zerna.
