MRT, LRT commuters asks DOTC to keep fares reasonable

Aug 6, 2010

MANILA – Commuters patronizing the Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Metro Rail Transit (MRT) on Friday appealed to the The Department of Transportation and Communications (DoTC) to keep the train fare reasonable and affordable. They said their meager salaries can’t afford a higher LRT or MRT rate which could go as much as P 20 to P 25 maximum.

“I’m not in favor of the fare hike in the MRT. It hurts my budget,” said banker Mike Atencio of Union Bank of the Philippines (UBP) in Pasig City. He takes the train daily from North Avenue in Diliman, Quezon City to Ortigas Avenue in Mandaluyong City. Transport group Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (Piston) or United Organizations of Drivers and Operators Nationwide said the government should not pass the burden on the commuters.
