July 16, 2010

LEGAZPI CITY

Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio will visit Albay in August and the people of the province are already excited with the expected arrival of the star. DiCaprio, best known for his role in the movie “Titanic,” is flying in to launch environmental promotion and protection activities in the province. DiCaprio is expected to visit Albay’s tourist spots, the world-renowned Mayon Volcano and the white-sand beaches of Misibis Resort in Bacacay town. But the Hollywood star may not be allowed to climb the active Mayon volcano or go near its lava front or the danger zone.

Due to activities of the volcano, authorities have declared a danger zone in the area where people are banned. Albay Gov. Joey Salceda himself is agog with the visit of the popular actor, saying it will be a big boost to the tourism and environment campaign of the province.

“We are excited that he wants to promote environmental protection in Albay. So we are preparing environmental options for his one-week stay here,” Salceda said. Joyce Ramirez, director for international publicity at PR Asia Worldwide, told the media that the actor will be in Albay on the first week of August. She said he was coming on a private jet. Salceda said the Albay tourism office will prepare activities for DiCaprio on the Albay Gulf where he could jet ski, sailboard and scuba dive.

The Albay governor said, that they will be asking the Hollywood actor to plant trees in Legazpi, go jogging in Linyon Hill, and conduct a story-telling session with kids at a relocation site in Daraga. It was recommended that DiCaprio also visit the eco-critical areas in Albay such as Rapu-Rapu island, Palanog in the municipality of Camalig, and the town of Tiwi. DiCaprio ranked no. 71 in the 2010 Forbes Celebrity 100 which also lists seven-division world champion and Sarangani Province Rep. Manny Pacquiao at no. 55. Popular television host Oprah Winfrey topped the list again. Pacquiao, the lone Filipino in the list, was listed with a take of $42 million and ranked higher than Hollywood superstars Tom Cruise (No. 56), Adam Sandler (No. 57), George Clooney (No. 58), Leonardo DiCaprio (No. 71), Robert Downey, Jr. (No. 73) and Julia Roberts (No. 77).

Filipino-American musician Allan Pineda Lindo, better known as apl.de.ap, also made it to the list as a member of the Black Eyed Peas (No. 16).
