BORACAY ISLAND, Aklan — This resort island continues to become a top tourism drawer despite the onslaught of super typhoon Yolanda.
Tim Ticar of the Department of Tourism-Boracay said that at least 6,0000 foreign and local tourists were stranded at the resort island when the typhoon struck.
“So far we received no complaint from any tourist a manifestation that local government did their job well in disaster management. I believe the tourists understood what happened and so Boracay continuously operates as a tourism destination,” Ticar said.
Although disaster officials reached the target of the zero casualty for Boracay, the typhoon damaged part of the Tambisaan port, one of the vital infrastructures in this resort island.
Ticar said that strong waves brought by the typhoon initially damaged the layout of the port.
The Tambisaan pier is being used as entry and exit points by the tourists during “habagat (southwest monsoon)”.
Several tourist spots were destroyed when super typhoon “Yolanda” battered the Visayas last Friday, November 8.
Bantayan Island, dubbed as the “quiet version” of tourist favorite Boracay, was one of the worst hit islands, ABS-CBN reported
There, all 12 cottages inside the Beach Placid Resort were totally destroyed. ‘Yolanda’ made landfall in Bantayan Island at 10:40 a.m. of Friday.
Bantayan Island is located in the north tip of Cebu. It is known for its white sand beaches and crystal clear waters.
The Bantayan Church which has existed for over 500 years was also partly damaged. Yolanda’s strong winds tore off its roof and rain water destroyed its walls. This church was the fifth to be erected in Cebu and the one with the thickest walls among all stone churches in Cebu.
The TV network reported that Camotes Island also took a direct hit and practically all its coconut trees either fell or were uprooted by Yolanda’s winds.
Camotes Island is known for its crystal clear pristine waters and sugary white sand. Located in east of Cebu Island, southwest of Leyte and north of Bohol, the Camotes Island, until recently, was Cebu’s best kept secret.
In Boracay, hotel roofs and trees were reportedly flying around the island during the height of the typhoon. Boracay Island is the favorite beach destination of foreigners and Filipinos because of its beautiful white sand beaches.
Coron Island in Palawan also received Yolanda’s fury. Coron is famous for its diving sites frequented by locals and tourists
