San Francisco -The city I left behind-Part Two

“San Francisco has only one drawback; ‘tis hard to leave.” -Rudyard Kipling- California ranks 41 out of 48 states surveyed in terms of church attendance (www.religionfacts.com/). Despite the state’s low religious ranking California is noted for having some of the grandest houses of worship in the country all of which are well attended. Californians are very spiritual people but they don’t attend church all that much. Continue reading

Desiderata Dissected (Part III – Running away from people with big mouth)

“Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit”. Between listening to a soft spoken person or taking the role of a sounding board to someone who screams, I would definitely opt for the soft spoken person even with the voice of ant. Loud people are annoying, period. Continue reading

Beach Bumming, Needle Sessions and More!

Beach bumming is for the young and lovely, not for the old and wobbly! Needle sessions are for the rich and carefree, not for ordinary folk! Well, old and wobbly me spent May and June bumming on the beach, not in a bikini, ha-ha-ha!, but in a borrowed pair of shorts. And I took part in needle sessions after loafing around the beach. Continue reading

Reforming the reformers

I watched the “Godfather” movie — for the umpteenth time — last week and loved every scene just like when I saw it the first time 42 years ago.  Yes, forty-two years and the movie is still popular – indeed, very popular — and the No. 1 movie of all time.  It had brought criminal enterprise and the violence and corruption that it brews into a level of acceptability – and even respectability — in people’s lives.  Continue reading

Do we need the Filipino language in college curriculum?

We are sad to hear that the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the Philippine government agency supervising colleges, universities and other institutions of higher learning, has decided to remove the study of the Filipino language in the General Education Curriculum. A Sliver of Freedom

Sometime ago, I wrote about the growth track program our church, the IPJM, has embarked on for its members and leaders. It is part of IPJM’s mission to equip us with life-giving, life-sustaining qualities and eventually become the “salt of the earth” and the “light of the world.” Looking forward to reaching that goal, we will fortify the church and make it grow to its fullest potential. San Mig Coffee goes the grandslam in PBA finals

July 1, 2014
MANILA (via PhilAmPress) – One team is going for a rare Grandslam. The other, well, just win a second franchise title. This would be the atmosphere with San Mig Coffee and Rain or Shine battle starting this week in a best-of-five series for the PBA Governors’ Cup championship that would give the San Miguel-Purefoods franchise a sweep of the 39th season of the country’s and Asia’s first professional league. July 1, 2014
MANILA (via PhilAmPress) — The Supreme Court (SC), voting 13-0, declared last Tuesday salient parts of the Malacanang-invented Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP) unconstitutional. With the ruling, is expected that more people will call for the impeachment of President Benigno S. Aquino III and the head of Budget and Management Secretary Florencio “Butch” Abad, who reportedly created and defended DAP. Continue reading
