Pinoy Style Christmas, Gary Ruiz and Chevy’s ‘Volt’

December 18, 2010
Filipinos tender Christmas parties like no other. Every Christmas feast features a table laden with food, food and more food. Gifts and door prizes for raffles and some contests also overflow as though the U.S. economy has never been better. But that’s just how we as a people are. We don’t have to be rich to enjoy life. We simply know how to make the most of God’s blessings, no matter how much or how little they might be. The spirit of giving and gratitude is ingrained in our being and bringing out the best of what we have on Christmas day is simply a part of our culture. Continue reading

Senator Mark Kirk’s Maiden Speech on the Floor of the U.S. Senate

December 18, 2010
Mr. President, almost 30 years ago I worked in the House of Commons in London. In Parliament, a new member’s maiden speech is given great weight. Traditionally, this speech is used to highlight what a member’s priorities are and sets the tone for his tenure. My experience in London guided my thoughts 10 years ago when I was elected to the House of Representatives. My maiden speech focused on the unique political history of the 10th Congressional District of Illinois and its tradition of electing thoughtful, independent leaders. Continue reading

Poems on the Run (Part 1)

by Carmelita Cochingco Ballesteros.
December 18, 2010
It was Thursday evening, 9:10 p.m. to be exact. The following day, November 5, 2010, was the Deepavali Holiday (Festival of Lights) in Singapore. My students, full-time teachers as they were, were heads of families and were raring to go home to be with their loved ones. Continue reading

A Procrastinator’s Plight

by Nelia Dingcong Bernabe
December 18, 2010
The clock is definitely ticking for I can see Christmas from my kitchen window. A few more days and the bearded man in the red and white suit will rack up major mileage on his sleigh delivering presents to every good girl and boy. But we know that beyond this bourgeois mindset – far more important than the red and white suit, gifts, and glitter – is the essence of why the Christian world celebrates this very special season. Senate Nixes Republican Ban On Pet Projects

by Don Azarias
December 18, 2010
One thing we can say about those congressional lawmakers: They will fight to death just to bring in the “pork barrel” to their home state. Never mind how large the nation’s debts and deficits. And speaking of “pork barrel”, it is a derogatory term used when referring to appropriation of public funds by lawmakers. I will try to explain it in layman’s term in the later part of this article.
