MIAMI, Florida – The National Basketball Association back-to-back champion team Miami Heat will keep Filipino-American coach Erik Spoelstra and this time for a longer period.
This was learned from NBA sources who said Spoelstra may have already signed a multi-year or longer contract with higher pay and benefits even as the Miami Heat announced some appointments in a statement issued to the press.
Spoelstra, 42, whose mother hails from San Pablo City in Laguna, piloted LeBron James and the Miami Heat team to back-to-back NBA titles.
Terms of Spoelstra’s new contract with Miami Heat were not immediately disclosed, but sources said an official announcement on the matter is forthcoming.
The team will start their training camp in the Bahamas soon.
According to ESPN, the Filipino-American coach, also the first Asian coach in the NBA to win the championship, maybe currently making $3 million per year.
In a press release dated September 28, the Miami Heat announced some promotions.
It was reported that Andy Elisburg has been promoted to Senior Vice President, Basketball Operations/General Manager; Adam Simon to Assistant General Manager/General Manager Sioux Falls Skyforce, Dan Craig to Assistant Coach/Player Development, Chad Kammerer to Director of NBA Scouting/Advance Scout, Keith Askins to Director of College and Pro Scouting and the hiring of Juwan Howard to Assistant Coach/Player Development.
NBA reports indicated that Spoelstra has a 260-134 record over five seasons. In the postseason, Spoelstra is 50-29 with three consecutive trips to the NBA Finals.
