Filipino boxing icon and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao has started training for his November 14 fight in Macau against Brandon Rios.
His assistant trainer, Buboy Fernandez, said that the fighter had 10 rounds of fight at his gym in General Santos City, indicating his seriousness to redeem himself in the boxing ring after two consecutive losses from Timothy Bradley and Juan Manuel Marquez.
Aside from workout in the gym, Pacquiao also plays basketball as part of his conditioning.
The fighting congressman at the same time denied reports attributed to his former promoter and friend, Rex Wakee Salud, that he has gone bankrupt. His wife, Jinkee, now the vice governor of Sarangani, joined him in denying the report.
Aside from being named as one of the world’s top 100 most powerful personalities, Forbes magazine has listed Pacquiao as the 14th highest-paid athlete in 2012, with $26 million in winnings and $8 million in endorsements.
At the same time, Salud vehemently denied having said that Pacquiao was already bankrupt, saying he was misquoted. He said he plans to apologize personally to the boxer-congressman for the inconvenience caused by the report on his alleged bankruptcy.
Salud explained in a report that he didn’t mean to say that Pacquiao is already losing his fortune.
Salud said he plans to meet the boxer personally to explain how the supposed interview withSuper Balita Cebu’s Edwin Lirazan transpired.
“Wa nako’y laing masulti, pasabton nako siya sa sitwasyon nga ug duna gyuy dautan nga gikan kanako mangayo ko niya ug pasaylo (I would not say anything, I will explain to him the situation and if I really did something wrong, I am asking an apology),” Salud said.
In Lirazan’s report, Salud was quoted as saying “Di lang kay nahurothurot, hurot gyud! (He did not just lose his money, he lost all of it)” when asked about Pacquiao’s financial status.
Pacquiao said he has not talked with Salud for a long time and there was no way his ex-promotion could have known any information about his finances.
“Hindi kami nagkwentuhan. Hindi ko na nga nakakausap ‘yun,” the boxing icon said
Pacquiao in a report on GMA News’ “24 Oras,” referring to boxing promoter Rex “Wakee” Salud.
“Wala akong naalala na may sinabi akong naubos na ang pera ni Manny (I don’t remember having said that Manny has lost his money),” Salud said. “Nagtataka nga ako bakit may lumalabas na sinabi ko raw naubos na (I am surprised why reports came out that I allegedly said his money was gone).”
According to Salud, it started when the Sun Star reporter asked him whether or not Pacquiao is selling his Los Angeles mansion because of bankruptcy.
“Hindi ako nagkomento,” Salud said. “‘Eh bakit kailangang ibenta ni Manny, ubos na siguro pera niya?’ Ang sabi ko lang, medyo nagipit siguro. ‘Yan lang ang sinabi ko sa kanya (I did not comment. Why would Manny sell, is his money gone? What I said was maybe he is hardup. That’s the only thing that I said.) “
“Wala naman ako sinabi ganoon. Ang sabi ko lang medyo mahina ang income kasi halos one year walang laban. Marami naman siya investments, lalo na sa GenSan (General Santos City) (I did say that. What I said was that he did not have good income for one year because he had no fight. But he has many investments, especially in GenSan),” said Salud.
Salud said Pacquiao has wisely invested his earnings by putting up a hotel, a convenience store and a gas station, while also getting involved in real estate and boxing gyms.
“Kahit na alam natin na galante si Manny, hindi ‘yan nagpapabaya sa mga kinita niya, lalo na ngayon na mas maayos ang pananaw niya sa buhay,” said Salud.
Salud said he plans to file charges of libel against the Sun Star Cebu writer of the “bankrupt story” on Pacquiao, through lawyer Filmore Gomos.
Pacquiao’s wife, Sarangani vice governor Jinkee Pacquiao, confirmed the sale of their Los Angeles mansion for $2.7 million, but mainly because they wanted to buy a more private residence in a gated place, most probably in Beverly Hills.
She disclosed that everytime they came to their house, their neighbors were complaining because of so many people coming to us. “Every time pumupunta kami dun, ‘yung mga kapitbahay namin, nagrereklamo kasi daw maraming tao… So ngayon, gusto namin ibenta para maghanap kami ng gated at may security,” she said.
Jinkee also denied that they are selling their P500-million house in posh Forbes Park in Makati City.
“Sabi ko nga kagabi, ‘yung reply ko sa tauhan ko na nag-text sa ‘kin, ‘Thats funny!’” Jinkee said, referring to the bankruptcy report.
