MANILA – Filipino world boxing icon Manny Pacquiao will return to the boxing ring this year after all.
Pacquiao’s handlers indicated that he will go against either Mike Alvarado or Brandon Rios in Macau or Singapore in November.
Rios has a 31-1-1 record with 23 knockouts while Alvarado’s recprd os 34-1 with 23 knockouts.
This developed as his Mexican nemesis, Juan Manuel Marquez, has refused to fight Pacquiao for the fifth time, despite a $6 million minimum offer.
Reports indicated that Marquez was turned off by the plan to hold the Pacquiao-Marquez fight in Macau, indicating that this will not gain much pay-per-view subscribers.
Another report showed that the Mexican warrior wanted $20 million prize money if he fights Pacquiao again.
Another reason Marquez gave in not fighting Pacquiao was that he needs a fight that will push him to the limit.
“Look, what is being said about Pacquiao – that a fifth fight wouldn’t make sense – well, it’s just like that. It still doesn’t make sense. To me, it wouldn’t be a challenge, and I need challenges.”
Marquez was also quoted stating to ESPN: “I would like to close my career in good standing and leave a legacy behind me. I want everyone to remember me for having faced the best fighters out there. So to me this is an important challenge, a difficult challenge, a tough challenge. But I always have the mindset that anything can be achieved.”
Marquez is turning 40 with a boxing record of 55-6 with one draw and 40 knockouts.
Bradley, 29, on the other hand, has a 30-0 record with 12 knockouts.
Pacquiao, 34, on the other hand, has a 54-5 record with two drawn and 38 knockouts.
Marquez agreed to fight American champion Timothy Bradley instead. Both Marquez and Bradley have defeated Pacquiao in the ring.
The Marquez-Bradley bout is already set at the Las Vegas Thomas and Mack Center on Sept. 14, Mexican Independence Day weekend. At stake will be the World Boxing Organization welterweight belt which Bradley won from Pacquiao in their controversial fight.
Top Rank promoter Bob Arum announced the Marquez-Bradley clash last week.
