Fil-Am Ana Julaton retains WBO title

Filipino-American champion Ana “The Huricane” Julaton of California and Pangasinan outpointed Mexican rival Jessica Villafranca Friday night (Saturday in Manila) to retain the World Boxing Organization super-bantamweight title in Yucatan, Mexico.

The judges gave Julaton a unanimous decision, winning by scores of 98-91, 96-93 and 97-92.

Julaton wound up with a cut in her forehead after the two clashed heads accidentally but Julaton simply had too much experience for her 18-year-old foe.

The win was Julaton’s third straight after being dealt her first defeat by Lisa Brown last year.

Julaton came into fight without trainer Freddie Roach, who is in Baguio City presiding over the training camp of Manny Pacquiao.

The victory boosted Julaton’s record to 10-2-1 with one knockout, while the loss saw Villafranca’s slate fall to 12-4-0 with six knockouts.
