On September 5th, 2011, in Chicago, USA, International Master Angelo Young proved once again his chess prowess by winning the Illinois state championship for the eighth time. He also became the first Filipino to win the Illinois state championship back in 1994.
Born in the Philippines, IM Angelo Young has made Chicago his home for over 15 years. IM Angelo Young, a gifted chess player, holds a record for earning 3 IM norms and the International Master title in 21 days back in the 90’s in New York, USA.
His first major accomplishment was in the 1993 Missouri Open, where he tied for 1st with Grandmasters Maxim Dlugy and Gregory Kaidanov. He also tied for 3rd in the 1996 World Open (one of the strongest open chess tournaments in the world) as the only untitled player ahead of numerous Grandmasters.
A full time chess instructor and owner of the Touch Move Chess Center http://www.tmchesscenter.com ) in Chicago, he is also a great guru in developing both young and adult chess players in Illinois. He is the 2011 Illinois state champion, and he holds the record for most wins at this event with 8. He learned the game of chess at the tender age of 9 years from his older brother, and he is also capable of playing blindfold chess with up to 5 advanced opponents.
Aside from the many events throughout his career that he has won, one of his most notable accomplishments is being undefeated in two seasons with the Chicago Blaze and being named to the All-Star team for Board 3 in the US Chess League (www.uschessleague.com ).
The Illinois state championship is held every year. The tournament is sponsored by the Illinois Chess Association (ICA) and was held at the Doubletree Hotel in Oakbrook, Illinois. The tournament was a grueling 6 round Swiss event where IM Young won the most coveted chess title in Illinois, scoring 5 wins in 6 outings and besting 141 players from different parts of the state, including 3 GMs, 1 IM, 5 FIDE Masters, and several local masters.
