Farida I. Chua, MD, and her husband, Filam MegaScene columnist Philip S. Chua, MD, FACS, FPCS, of Northwest Indiana and Las Vegas, were among those honored by the 7,900-strong Indiana State Medical Association for their “unselfish devotion, loyalty to the medical profession, and dedication to the well-being of Hoosiers, which reflects admirably on our profession and makes all of us proud.”
Farida practiced pediatrics and Philip, cardiovascular surgery, immediately after the latter’s Fellowship in cardiac surgery under the renowned heart transplant surgeon, Dr. Denton A. Cooley, at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston. Farida, who is former president of the Philippine Medical Association in Chicago Women’s Auxiliary, trained at the Cook County Hospital in Chicago.
The Chuas have five children who are all physicians, four married to physicians also, and ten grandchildren, all of them based in the United States.
On June 14, 2008, they were honored with a PEACE Family pursuit-of-excellence award (“as a family of 11 physicians”) in Atlantic City, New Jersey, with the Hon. Willy GAA, then Philippine Ambassador to the United States, presenting the award, together with PEACE president Dr. Frank Rabadam and Award chairman Dr. Carmelo Dichoso.
The ISMA recognition was contained in a framed Certificate of Distinction which was bestowed upon each of them, together with a gold pin that says “50 Years of Service.”
