Des Plaines, IL- May 28. The National Press Club of the Philippines, USA will hold its Inauguration of Officers and new members for 2011-2012 on Saturday, May 28, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. in Café La Cave, located at 2777 Mannheim Road in Des Plaines, IL.
In keeping with the sesquicentennial celebration of Dr. Jose Rizal, NPC-Phil. U.S.A. chose for its speakers 2 young professionals in the broadcast media and 1 very young columnist for a mainstream newspaper in her town. The three speakers are expected to discuss the current trends and inventions in the industry or in print and broadcast journalism and how, from their own experience, these trends and inventions have impacted their lives and work.
Don Villar is a veteran broadcast news journalist, labor leader,community activist and soon to be lawyer. Shortly after graduating from UIC in 1991, Don began working at WLS-TV. Twenty years later, Don is still at WLS. He’s presently a producer/news writer on the morning newscast. In 2002, Don received a local Emmy Award for his work on a breaking news story, a ruptured water main that flooded Lake Shore Drive and caused a street collapse in Chicago’s Lakeview Neighborhood.
Don is also very much active in NABET-CWA Local 41, a union representing nearly a thousand local broadcast news and TV production workers. He was first elected shop steward of the news writers at ABC in 2004. Last year, he was elected VicePresident of the local. As Vice President, Don works on the collective bargaining agreements between the union and various employers and responds to workplace issues affecting union members. Don is also involved in union organizing and mobilizing in support of union issues. Don is also active in the Asian American community. He was President of the local chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) for five years where he worked to promote diversity in local news rooms and news coverage.
Angelica Duria is currently a general assignment reporter for WITI-TV FOX6 News in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Most of the time, you can find her reporting for Fox6 Wakeup during weekday mornings.
Prior to that, she spent two years as a general assignment reporter in Northwest Arkansas atKHBS/KHOG-TV 40/29 News.
Angelica has covered a wide range of stories involving everything from severe weather, to murder investigations, to politics and even sports. Some of her most memorable reports include braving a blizzard, telling stories of tornado survival and the ongoing political saga unfolding at Wisconsin’s State Capitol. Her true passion is sharing uplifting stories of community support.
Angelica graduated Cum Laude from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2008 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Broadcast Journalism. Her work in college won her several student awards, including a Hearst and an Illinois News Broadcasters Association award. She also held internships at WICD-TV in Champaign and CBS News in Washington D.C.
As a first generation Filipino-American, Angelica is a proud member of the Asian American Journalists Association.
Angelica was born in Chicago and raised in the village of Elmwood Park.
She is the daughter of proud parents Dr. Mark Barnes, DDS; and Chicago fashion designer Justine Alvarez Barnes.
The youngest speaker, Elizabeth Horner is an 11th grade student at Greenville High School in Greenville, OH. She has national, state and local awards and recognitions under her belt from the United States President, Ohio Governor, State Senate Assembly to the Mayor of her hometown in Greenville, Ohio. “One of the very brightest young people…she has achieved and done more in her young life in our community than many people accomplish in a lifetime”, said former Greenville Mayor Greg Fraley of Elizabeth.
In her own words, Elizabeth described her first crack at recognition as a talented writer and the joy she got out of the passion she developed for writing at a very young age.
“I was nine-years old when I blushed with pleasure, holding my first published written work like it was a treasure. I knew I was receiving recognition for doing something I thoroughly enjoyed. Two months later, the editor of the Daily Advocate Newspaper gave me my first assignment to write an article for the ‘Special Independence Day Edition’ of the newspaper. My article made the front page as the lead story. I have been a columnist since then. At fifteen I wasn’t just writing for myself. I had a message that I wanted to send: in a phrase, ‘the virtue of empowerment’ ”.
