NYOMY OBCEMEA

FilAm Rising Star in Golf

Below is her sister’s brief account of a her early beginnings in her continuing quest for success in the sport.

No one predicted in our family that my little sister will be playing GOLF. Majority of competitive golfers started very young but not for Nyomy. She became interested in golf at the age 16 during her junior year in high school.  She told my father, Rosendo Obcemea of Pampanga, PI, that she wanted to try out for her high school varsity golf team. My father who is also a golfer told my sister that there is only slim chance of making the team because it is a very hard sport to learn. For nine months Nyomy practiced from five to eight hours everyday under the watchful eyes of my father and the never ending support of my mother, Angelita Obcemea also of Pampanga, PI.

Nyomy was good enough to make the team after her none stop hard work. On her first tournament she posted a score of 42 and continued to progress to become the number one player of her team. After the first season she was selected as a member of the All-Region Team and the Second All-State team and awarded as the MVP.  During her senior year her coach ranked her as their number one player and as the season progressed Nyomy was again became MVP for two consecutive years. She was selected as member of All-Region team for the second time and landed a spot on the First All-State team.

During the summer of 2009 she played in the Utah Junior Golf Association. As the season continued Nyomy showed tremendous improvement and maturity in the game. Playing her first tournament as junior golfer in St George she caught the eyes of Jeff Smith, coach of Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. Nyomy was awarded a full ride scholarship and a spot on the Women Golf Team.

Presently Nyomy is working hard and is continuously training and practicing to perfect her game. She is also coming to Chicago to receive her Gintong Pamana award in Sports along with other promising youth and successful young adult achievers.
