PASAY CITY – On resumption of its session on May, the Senate archived the articles of impeachment against former Ombudsman Merceditas Gutierrez having resigned from the post.
The senators said they would focus on urgent legislative matters like the Anti-Trust Bill, the National Telecommunications reform bill and the Cybercrime Prevention Bill.
The Senate has only 12 working days left before session adjourns again.
Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III moved to have House Resolution 105 sent to the archives, saying the impeachment has been rendered moot and academic by Gutierrez’s resignation.
The senators led by Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said they were happy the trial of Gutierrez did not push through.
“It saved us money. It saved us emotional pain,” Enrile said. “We have avoided a division, a rupture in society that probably would have made political divide more pronounced. It also lessened the burden on the legislators so that they can attend to more pressing problems of legislation in the country.”
