Filipinos to reconnect in a Time Capsule

SAN FRANCISCO – May is Asian American Heritage Month and the Filipino community of the San Francisco Bay Area is preparing a Time Capsule to memorialize the day to day living and typical experiences of present day Filipinos.

Hello 2098

A  treasure trove of Filipino challenges and  achievements, the 22X24X36″ vessel  will leave  poignant messages in a medium  that evoke and vividly recall another time, the life of an old generation – in which Filipinos lived.

Suitable photo voice materials and artifacts to be preserved in the capsule will be collected from the public by Filipino American students during the 103rd celebration of pagPhilippine Independence Day at Union Square on Sunday, June 12, 2011.

A donor form listing the item, the name of the contributor and reason for inclusion to the Time Capsule will also be made available online.

Acceptable offerings range from Menus of Filipino Eateries, activities and photos of different Filipino organizations nationally, listing of leading causes of illness and death among Filipinos, Newspaper Clippings, Photographs, Video and Digital Recordings of legal victories, Personal CDs of accomplished Filipinos in the field of Entertainment, Sports, Business, Academia and Politics including pictorial and physical features of their living and work environment.

Acceptable artifacts are Jewelry, Speeding and Parking tickets, Cell Phones, PDA, Calculator, Baseball caps and other  items of interest.

The contents will feature the National advocacy for Filipino WWII veterans and the Philippine American War forum that produced the historic Plaque Filipinos want to install on the base of a monument that glorified a naval victory in Manila Bay in 1898, the same year Philippine Independence was proclaimed. Newspaper clippings, Videos, Digital recordings and congressional transcripts together with the life story and experiences of individuals who contributed their time and resources to both causes will be preserved.

“How such contents and offering would be received and by who depend on how we take care of the present so the future can remember the past,” said a prominent member of the Filipino community and a prospective contributor.

Items already received and destined to be preserved in the Time Capsule include a  Manny Pacquiao Bubble Head, a SF Giants Baseball Cap with an inverted flag of the Philippines,  a copy of SF Chronicle with picture of Tim Linsecum on the front page,   Gift of Barong,  a film by Benito Bautista, Singing Song of Leyte by Eli Africa,  In Servitude with Honor and Dignity by Margaret Lacson and a recording of the spirited debate between Filipino American Republicans and Democrats on Speak Out, a TV program by ABS CBN.

Targeted to span 100 years, the Time Capsule will be opened in commemoration of the Philippine Independence Bicentennial on June 12, 2098.

A community reception to preview the Time Capsule and examine the artifacts already accepted to be preserved is scheduled for May 1, 2011 at San Francisco’s  War Memorial and Performing Arts Center.
