Mariel won’t be June bride as church wedding put on hold

Will the planned June Church wedding of television host and actress Mariel Rodriguez with husband Robin Padilla push through?

From the looks of it, walking down the aisles as a June bride for Mariel is a dream that may not come true.

Although they were already married under Muslim rites, the Roman Catholic church wedding was planned by Robin to prove to one and all his love for Mariel. Robin is a Muslim convert while Mariel is a devout Roman Catholic.

This as retired Lingayen Archbishop Oscar Cruz disclosed that the planned June wedding will likely not be allowed by the Catholic Church because of the disparate doctrines of the Catholic church and Islam.

“So far it’s on hold,” Mariel herself said of the planned church wedding in an interview with “Showbiz News Ngayon.”

It was gathered that the wedding will still push through in a date to be decided by the couple.

Mariel disclosed that Archbishop Cruz sent them a document on to the rules of the Catholic church.

“May pinadala na papers si Archbishop. Meron kasi doong part na kailangan hindi puwedeng magpakasal kapag iba ‘yung religion. Kasi nga ang Muslim puwedeng magpakasal ng more than one na babae. Then ‘yung pinaka-last na parang sinulat doon puwede daw if parang pipilitin kong  mag-convert. Sabi ko, ‘Ha? Bakit gano’n? Sa Islam nga walang pilitan, sa Catholic meron,’” she said.

Archbishop Cruz himself explained on “SNN” the Catholic church’s stand on marriage.

Ang mga Muslim, mayroon silang paniniwalang ganyan,” he said.

Mariel and Robin tied the knot on August 19, 2010 in a ceremony inside the Taj Mahal in Agra, India.

After their Muslim wedding, the couple planned a church wedding originally set December 2010. Later it was moved to Feb. 14 but that, too, got derailed because the couple shot a movie in India.

Mariel said Robin had tried to comfort her by saying, “Wala tayong magagawa. Rules ‘yan.  Ang puwede lang siguro nating magawa (is) makikiusap tayo.”

“Sobra siyang (Padilla) mellow. Pero naiintindihan ko na ginagawa niya ‘yon to make me feel better kasi naa-affect ako, nakikita niya,” Mariel said.

Aside from her actor-husband, Mariel is supported by her grandmother May Sazon, who sent her a message of encouragement.

“Sabi niya, ‘Don’t worry about your church wedding. What’s important is you’re happy with your marriage.’ Na-touch nga ako, eh. At least sinusuportahan ako ng pamilya ko, ng mga kaibigan ko.”
