Health experts warn anew of contaminated street foods

June 25, 2010

MANILA — The Department of Science and Technology again warned regular eaters of street foods, most of which are students, whose health is at risk due to possible ingestion of fecally-soiled eggs from streetcorners’ Kwek-kwek stall and other ill-prepared foods.

Meat, milk, eggs and other meat/milk/egg products are safe –when properly handled. But in some cases here, animal- sourced foods have yet to be made safe, Dr. Mildred A. Padilla, a professor at the College of Veterinary Medicine, UP Los Baños said.

Speaking before the 10th Science Council of Asia Conference hosted by the Philippines, Padilla said livestock and poultry are principal sources of many harmful food borne and microorganisms and chemical residues.

Some common foods which can cause food poisoning if proper care is not taken are, aside from raw poultry are unpasteurized milk, red meat, poisonous mushrooms, pesticides on fruits and vegetables, egg and raw egg products, raw meat and water.

Foodborne illnesses are a growing health problem in developed and developing countries. It was reported that in 2000 alone, 2.1 million people died of diarrheal disease worldwide.

Some well recognized foodborne illness are recognized as emerging because recently these foodborne illnesses are becoming more common, e.g. salmonellosis. Salmonellosis has been reported decades ago but has now increased in incidences in many countries worldwide.
