Cotto-Pacquiao rematch possible – Top Rank chief

IF Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto would survive Nicaraguan Ricardo Mayorga, Top Rank Promotion chief Bob Arum assures Cotto of three future highly rated bouts including a rematch against Filipino World’s pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao. Cotto (35-2 with 28 knockouts), who is scheduled to fight Mayorga (29-7-1 with 22 knockouts) for the World Boxing Association’s light middleweight belt on March 12, has also a chance to have a rematch against Antonio Margarito and a fight against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Pacquiao, Cotto

If he surpasses the challenge, which will be brought by any of the two fighters, Arum said Cotto’s opportunity to have a rematch against Pacquiao will absolutely turn possible.

“Cotto is going to have a chance of a rematch against Margarito, and Julio Jr. could fight for the World Boxing Council middleweight title in Mexico,” Arum told boxing site www.examiner.com.

Pacquiao, 32, a congressman in province of Saranggani, will clash against 39-year-old Shane Mosley on May 7 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, USA. He said he is willing to face anybody in the ring without hesitation.

When Cotto fought Pacquiao in 2009, he was badly beaten via ninth round technical knockout. The fight was rather one sided in Pacquiao’s favor.

But since then Cotto has risen in weight and defeated unbeaten champion in Yuri Foreman to capture the WBA light middleweight title.

Pacquiao, who recorded eight titles in different weight categories, captured a junior middleweight title when beat the Mexican Antonio Margarito on November 13.

Unless unbeaten Floyd Mayweather will change his mind and fight Pacquiao, the rematch between Cotto and Pacquiao may possibly move to later dates.
