Floods hit Caraga region

BUTUAN CITY — Some 2,009 persons fled their homes due to rising floodwaters in the Municipality of San Francisco, Agusan del Sur, cities of Butuan and Surigao and Agusan del Norte, according to initial reports from government and private rescue teams, including their respective disaster councils and social welfare offices.

In San Francisco, Agusan del Sur, local communications and rescue group Clean 10 and KBP president Max Tutor said some 1,117 evacuees from different barangays of the capital town of Agusan del Sur are now being temporarily housed at the San Francisco Municipal Gym as of 2:30 a.m. Monday.

Dr. Blanche Gobenciong, Office of the Civil Defense Caraga regional director, confirmed the initial report of the number of evacuees as she claimed the number may increase by the hour due to continuing downpour of rains.

Gobenciong said some local government units (LGUs) in the region have not reported yet due to unavailability of power.

In most parts of Caraga region, there are brownouts, she said. Power coops have not explained about the sudden power outage.
