Survey: Corruption worsening in Ph

MANILA – Corruption in the Philippines has worsened, with political parties and the police seen as the most corrupt institutions, the Global Corruption Barometer 2010 shows.

The barometer was released last week by the Transparency International (TI) based on a survey of more than 91,000 people in 86 countries and territories which focused on petty bribery, perceptions of public institutions, and who people trust to fight corruption.

In the Philippines, 1,000 persons were surveyed from June 21 to July 7, according to a Malaya report on the survey.

Forty-eight percent of respondents in the Philippines found government actions in the fight against corruption to be ineffective, 28 percent found them effective, while 24 percent said these were neither effective nor ineffective, according to the report.

The survey showed that 69 percent of respondents believe the level of corruption has increased in the past three years, 25 believe the level is the same while 6 percent believe it has decreased.
