2 virtual unknowns are top Phl taxpayers; Willie Revillame is no.3, Henry Sy only no. 8


QUEZON CITY – World boxing icon Manny Pacquiao has been dislodged as the number one taxpayer in the Philippines by a lady construction company executive.

On the other hand, Smart Communications retained the number one spot in list of top corporate taxpayers with a payment of P10 billion, followed by Globe Telecom with P5 billion tax payment.

This is based on the lists of top 500 individual and top 500 corporate taxpayers made public by Commissioner Kim Jacinto-Henares of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).

Based on the list, Pacquiao, the topnotcher in 2008, is now 113th with total tax payments in 2009 of P7.1 million.

The first two biggest individual taxpayers were virtual unknowns. The topnotcher, Elaine B. Gardiola, treasurer of the A.E. Gardiola Construction, Inc.,   who was  fourth placer in the 2008 listing, paid a total of P59.54 million in income taxes last year while the second placer Rosabelle C. Bandong paid P57.87 million.

Other top taxpayers based on the BIR list are celebrities like television host, singer and businessman Wilfredo “Willie” B. Revillame (No. 3) of TV 5,  San Miguel Corp. president Ramon S. Ang (No. 6), Henry Sy Sr., the richest Filipino in Forbes Magazine, who is no. 8 in the list with P25 million in tax payments.

Showbiz personalities were also on the list, among them Sharon Cuneta Pangilinan (P19.55 million, 18th); Kristina Bernadette “Kris” Aquino Yap (P12.79 million, 39th); Piolo Jose Nonato Pascual (P11.51 million, 50th); and Marian Rivera Gracia (P10.12 million, 62nd).

Media personalities Maria A. Ressa (P5.91 million, 173rd) and Julius Caesar C. Babao (P5.88 million, 175th) were also among the top taxpayers in 2009.

 Bandong took the second spot from Mr. Revillame, whose P57.25-million tax payments last year dropped him to third from second place in 2008.

Francis Carlo D. Taparan placed fourth with P38.75 million, while Ronaldo R. Soliman kept fifth place after paying P36.7 million.

Mr. Ang, president of San Miguel paid P26.44 million, while Oscar M. Lopez, former chairman of First Philippine Holdings, Co. (P25.70 million); and  Sy, Sr., president of SM Investments Corp. (P25.18 million), placed sixth, seventh, and eighth, respectively.

GMA Network Chief Executive Officer Felipe L. Gozon (P22.19 million) ranked 12th, following individuals Carlos D.C. Ejercito (P25.02 million, ninth), Bonifacio D. Gumboc, Jr. (P24.74 million, 10th), and Maria Teresa Caridad P. Gallego (P24.45 million, 11th).

Following them were the likes of Bank of the Philippine Islands President/CEO Aurelio R. Montinola III (P20.14 million, 14th); GMA President Gilberto R. Duavit, Jr. (P19.77 million, 17th); Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) Chairman Manuel M. Lopez (P19.32 million, 19th); and Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT) Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan (P19.28 million, 20th).

Other businessmen on the list were UnionBank Chairman/CEO Justo A. Ortiz (P15.43 million, 27th); TV5 Pres. Ray C. Espinosa (P13.99 million, 33rd); former Philippine American Life and General Insurance Co. Pres./CEO Jose L. Cuisia, Jr. (P12.93 million, 37th); Metrobank Pres. Arthur V. Ty (P11.18 million, 55th); tobacco magnate Lucio C. Tan (P9.23 million, 76th); and ABS-CBN Chairman/CEO Eugenio L. Lopez III (P5.15 million, 242nd).
