FilAm Village News Tidbits

Kulit Reporter’s First Week on the Job
November and December are certainly this season’s busiest months. Parties here, parties there, parties everywhere! And of course, in our FilAm community, we are never short of celebrations. Big or small, we throw parties like there’s no recession, right? Hotels and banquets are fully booked for Christmas Parties and celebrations of all kinds.

Really, it’s a season of joy and thanksgiving. It’s time to make amends with those we have had differences and misunderstanding. Let’s give our family, friends, loved ones and associates the gift of kindness, understanding and compassion. And to our old enemies, the very precious gift of forgiveness. Since it’s the birthday of our Lord Jesus, we must emulate what our Father in heaven Himself had taught and shown us through His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ, none other than forgiveness.

Let me share with you some of the happenings in our FilAm Village through these pictures.

PAPPAS PRESENTS AWARD TO CHICAGO FILIPINO AMERICAN LIONS CLUB Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas (right) presents an award of excellence at a reception in her downtown Chicago office to Anita Rosa, president of the Chicago Filipino American Lions Club for charitable work and scholarships. At five years the organization prides itself as the first Lions Club to gain the title: Model Club within District 1A. It has surpassed other Lions Clubs in Chicago by generating a pledge of $7,000 to benefit various social and civic projects.

If you had not been to The Duets concert at Horseshoe Casino’s “The Venue,” let me share some thoughts and photos. First, it was a production of iShow with Gina Ang as producer. I’m not really sure if she had other partners in this venture but I know that Samland Group of Companies led by Flora and Fred Sampang were major sponsors. Dolly Engracia’s Carefirst Home Health Services, Inc. was another sponsor. Please check some of their photos here with the concert artists – sultry Kuh Ledesma with John Ford Coley, Stephen Bishop and David Pomeranz.

John Ford Coley’s hit “I’d Really Love to See You Tonight” really got the audience worked up. Stephen Bishop’s “On and On” and “It Might Be You” were obviously still many people’s favorite. And David Pomeranz, whose songs and composition “Got to Believe in Magic” and “Old Song” (the last one was popularized by Barry Manilow) got the audience singing along. But I loved that David sang a Philippine Christmas song. That, to me, says a lot about him and his respect and feelings for Filipinos. To be able to learn the language and melody of the people outside of his own country is great. I give him extra credit for it.
