MANILA — Former Asian junior champion International Master (IM) Ricardo “Ricky” de Guzman recently ruled the 2010 Dolan Memorial International Chess Tournament at the Mechanics Institute Chess Club in San Francisco, California, USA last October 9.
The US-based De Guzman, who is originally from Cainta, Rizal, defeated Jeffrey Xiaoyang Zhang, Daniel Liu, compatriots Arjoe Loanzon, Romulo Fuentes and Paul Gallegos to capture the championship trophy in the five-round United States Chess Federation (USCF) sanctioned even which 41 players.
Now 49 years old, De Guzman lives in Hayward, California and is best remembered for winning the 1981 Asian Junior Chess Championships in Dhaka, Bangladesh which merited him an outright IM title, according to a pool factoid sent by IM Marlon Bernardino.
Likewise, he also topped the 2010 Pafnutieff Open Chess Championships last August 7 in San Francisco, California.
Some of the previous titles he has won in the US are Bagby 2010 last July 17 at the Mechanics Institute Chess Club in San Francisco, California, 2010 Sacramento Chess Championships last July 3 to 5 at the Sacramento Chess Club, 2010 Bekeley Open last June 26 to 27 at the Palo Alto Chess Club in Berkekey, California and the Addison 2010 Chess Championships last June 12.
