MANILA — President Benigno S. Aquino III has appointed Grace Poe-Llamanzares, daughter of the late National Artist and Filipino movie action king Fernando Poe Jr. and actress Susan Roces, as chairman of the Movie, Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB).
Also appointed to MTRCB was noted film director Emmanuel Borlaza who was named vice chairman of the agency.
Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said President Aquino appointed former Quezon City Councilor Joseph Peter Sison as the new president of the National Home Mortgage Finance Corporation (NHMFC).
Jose Martin Luis “Chito” Gascon, a partymate of President Aquino in the Liberal Party, was appointed as board member of the Bases Conversion Development Authority (BCDA), while Nestor Palabyab was named deputy executive director of the Philippine Trade Training Center.
Malacanang defended the appointment of a show business scion as new head of MTRCB.
“We can be sure presidential appointments were studied first,” said Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio “Sonny” Coloma.
His assurance came amidst speculations on why President Aquino appointed Mary Grace Poe-Llamanzares as MTRCB head.
She’s the low-profile daughter of the late action king Fernando Poe Jr. and former movie queen Susan Roces.
Llamanzares will replace MTRCB chief Conzoliza Laguardia.
Coloma appealed not to pre-judge Llamanzares.
“Let’s allow her to work first before judging her performance,” he said.
MTRCB is the government agency tasked with reviewing, supervising and regulating motion pictures, publicity materials and television programs.
This agency can also close down erring movie houses and similar establishments.
