Nietes trounces Mexican foe, retains WBO title

MANILA – Donnie ‘Ahas’ Nietes hardly made noise when he left the country to defend his World Boxing Organization minimum weight crown at the enemy’s turf. On Sunday, Nietes made strong statement for him to be recognized as one of the local boxing heroes after making his fourth successful defense of his world title against another Mexican challenger Mario Rodriguez at the Auditorio Luis Estarda Medina in Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico. Nietes piled up points in the first eight rounds, enough for him to survive late onslaught enroute to a convincing unanimous decision. After punishing the Mexican opponent with accurate combinations, Niettes bloodied Rodriguez’s nose in the eighth round.

Sensing a loss right in his own turf, Rodriguez ignored a bloodied nose and came out more aggressive in the last four rounds as he cut Nieties’ right eyebrow. However, Nietes still came out victorious as all three judges scored in favor of the Filipino
