Agusan girds for 9th Baoto Festival at Lake Mainit

JABONGA, Agusan del Norte – Preparations are in high gear for the Caraga region’s “9th Baoto Festival 2010” in September in Lake Mainit, the fourth largest lake in the Philippines. The Lake Mainit side municipality of Jabonga will host the big event. Agusan del Norte Gov.

Erlpe John Amante and Agusan del Norte solon Rep. Angel Amante (2nd District, Agusan del Norte) and the Department of Tourism (DoT) Caraga region are fully supporting the “Baoto” competition. The competition will take place at the Lake Mainit’s 173.40 square kilometers, the deepest lake in the country with maximum depth reaching 223 meters, bounded by the municipalities of Jabonga and Kitcharao in Agusan del Norte and the municipalities of Mainit and Alegria in Surigao del Norte in Northeastern Mindanao.

The kick off ceremony of the “9th Baoto Festival 2010” will be on September 15 to 18, this year to be held at Great Lake Resort in this town, with a total P200,000 cash prize. Jabonga is one of the 11 towns in the province of Agusan del Norte gifted with scenery as it is embraced by mountain ranges and surrounded by lakes perfect for the said festival. The highlight of the 2010 “Baoto” competition features the 30K paddling marathon which is said to be the longest paddling race in the Philippines.

“All committees are on the move for the success of the big event,” Agusan del Norte Provincial Information Officer Edgar Palarca Jr. announced. The “baoto” boat competition shall also include “baoto” race without an outrigger, regatta using only the sail made from indigenous material, and the single and double Slalom for men and women category. The winner for the 30 kilometer marathon race is P40,000 pesos, while a prize of P36,000 will be awarded to whoever will be declared second place and P16,000 for the third prize winner.
