Palace expects keeping public trust despite Singson drug bust

Aug 20, 2010

MANILA – Malacanang is optimistic public perception and sentiment about government under President Benigno Aquino III will remain positive despite Ilocos Sur Rep. Ronald Singson’s arrest in Hong Kong for possessing
cocaine, an illegal substance.

“That incident’s over-all effect won’t be as significant as leadership quality the President demonstrates,”
said communications group Sec. Herminio Coloma. Authorities noted Mr. Aquino enjoys popularity and public support as he’s setting the example for good governance so people can follow accordingly. They also observe his obedience to traffic rules alone is already encouraging people to do the same, to respect the law and to avoid corrupt practices.
Coloma acknowledged Singson’s drug bust put the country in a bad light.

He believes such incident must move government to further enhance its campaign against illegal drugs. At present, Singson faces drug trafficking charges after Hong Kong authorities nabbed him last month. This incident failed to erode public confidence in President Aquino and his administration, however, Coloma clarified.
