Just like many other strong women I know, Crispina Unabia Arnan wears many hats. But no one that I know of, wears them as well as she does. A nurse, business entrepreneur, leader, church volunteer, wife, mother, grandmother and more, she seems to have mastered the art of juggling responsibilities without losing herself in the process. Her chic look, classy style and confident demeanor belie the pressures associated with a busy health care business and an active lifestyle of a woman constantly on the go.

But Cris, as she is fondly addressed by friends, colleagues and family, doesn’t seem to mind the demands of her career, social obligations and a vast network of professionals and business associates with whom she interacts almost on a daily basis. Nicknamed “Dolly”, Maria Dolores Agduma Engracia, leads a life with a purpose rooted in faith in God. It is faith that rises beyond the limit of just believing and moves on to living and acting , yielding to a caring, loving, compassionate and creative expression of self for others. Dolly’s world today is a long way and years away from the life she knew in her hometown of Lambayong, Sultan Kudarat, where she was born.

Her parents, Don Felipe Engracia, a farmer, and Leticia Agduma., a Grade school teacher taught her to dream big, to find her purpose in life, uphold the value of compassion and keep in mind that everything happens for a reason. And from her maternal grandmother, she inherited the business acumen that would later prove crucial to holding her family together and helping everyone achieve his or her goal. To mark the 112th anniversary of Philippine Independence from Spain we are featuring Dr. Paz Buenaventura Naylor who is related to the first President of the Philippine Republic, General Emilio Aguinaldo.

Pat, as her close friends call her, is not without provenance. On her maternal side, she is the grandniece of Aguedo Velardo who fought in the revolution against Spain and subse- quently became the Minister of Education in Aguinaldo’s cabinet. He was also a member of the three man Consejo de Guerra (Council of War) against the takeover of the American forces in the country. Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo was the first president when the Republic declared its independence from Spain on June 12, 1898 in Kawit, Cavite. Read more »
