Donaire knocks down foe in Puerto Rico

World Boxing Association interim super-flyweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire Jr. trounced Herman “Tyson” Marquez for an eighthround technical knockout last Saturday at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico Jose Miguel Agrelot in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico. The win came as world boxing icon Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao announced plans to retire from boxing to be able to devote his time to his job as congressman of Sarangani. Filipino American boxer Anna “The Hurricane” Julaton, whose father hails from Pozzurubio, Pangasinan, also won her championship fight.

Julaton flew immediately to Manila where he was feted by President Benigno Donaire knocks down foe in Puerto Rico Aquino III in Malacanang. The other Filipino campaigners, Bernabe Concepcion and Eden Sonsona, however, were both knocked out aby their opponents, Juan Manuel Lopez and Jonathan Oquendo.

In Pasig City, Filipino-American Brian Viloria scored a split decision over Mexican Omar Soto also last Saturday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City. Donaire, a long-time resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, in probably his last fight as a super flyweight, was never threatened throughout the bout, where he fought from a southpaw stance for four rounds before switching to an orthodox stance in the fifth. That was when the Filipino dropped Marquez with a flurry of punches.

A powerful uppercut ended the bout at 2:59 in the eighth round.Philippine officials led by President Aquino, including Senator Manuel “Lito” Lapid, congratulated Donaire Jr. and Viloriia for their victory. Donaire twice knocked down Marquez in rounds 5 and 8. The referee stopped the fight in the 8th round after Donaire knocked down Marquez with his powerful uppercut. Senator Lapid, chairman of the Senate committee on games and sports, also congratulated Filipino boxer and two-time world lightflyweight champion Brian “Hawaiian Punch” Viloria when he won against Omar Sotto of Mexico.

According to Lapid, Donaire and Viloria have shown to the world the strength of Filipino boxers in their latest fights.

”Dapat maging huwaran ng mga boksingero natin sina Donaire at Viloria dahil sa pagsisikap nilang makamit ang kanilang mithiin [They should serve as inspirations to other boxers. Donaire and Viloria worked hard to attain their goals],” Lapid said. Lopes has been unbeaten World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight champion. Marquez quickly dropped Concepcion in the first round but he was also knocked down before the bell. Urged on by the crowd,Lopez floored Concepcion twice in the second round, ending the bout at 2:37. Oquendo also scored a knockout victory, stopping Eden Sonsona at the 1:05 mark of the ninth round of a WBO bantamweight eliminator. Lopez now has 29 wins with 26 KOs while Concepcion now has a 28-4-1 win-loss-draw (15 KOs) record. Oquendo now has 19 wins (12 KOs) against two losses while Sonsona dropped to 19-6 (6 KOs). There were no knockdowns in the 10-round nontitle flyweight bout, but the 29-year-old Viloria, a native of Honolulu, Hawaii, inflicted damages enough to win. Two judges had it 97-93
for Viloria while the other scored it 97-93 for Soto.
