Comelec to issue voter’s id to 25 million voters from July to December 2010

July 16, 2010

MANILA – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) said that by January 2011, all the 25 million voters will have their voter’s identification (ID) card. Comelec Commissioner Rene Sarmiento said that starting this month until the end of 2010, they will be issuing voter’s ID to all registered voters, who have yet received their ID from the poll body.
“Starting July to December 2010, those who have been complaining that they have not received their voter’s ID will soon be getting it after the completion of this project,” he said.

Voter’s ID, just like passports, Social Security Service (SSS) ID are considered pertinent documents. The undertaking is part of the P1.5 billion on-going registration project of the poll body which is being implemented by the NECUnison.
Meanwhile, the Commission will be using some 1,000 Data Capturing Machines (DCMs) for the registration of new voters in the sangguniang kabataan and barangay in time for the October 25 polls.

The barangay registration will be on August 1 to 10, Sarmiento said that aside from registering new voters, the registration period would also paved the way in identifying double registrants. Compared to the earlier registration, the data from the DCMs will be transmitted electronically to the Comelec main server. “This is part of the Automated Finger-print Identification System (AFIS) that Comelec is introducing to cleanse the voters list,” he said.
More than 1,600 DCMs will be distributed to municipality, (one per municipality) to be used for the registrations.
The process involves, finger prints, faces will be captured and results will be transmitted electronically to the main office of the poll body in Manila.
